Prvi je: Mechanical Alloying (MA),odnosi se na proces u kom se smeša prahova (različitih metala ili jedinjenja metala) mehaničkitretira zajedno. 33 Promene u strukturi tretiranih materijala posledica su težnje za dobijanjemhomogene smeše prahova. Sa druge strane, mehaničko tretiranje materijala koji su homogeniili pomešani u tačno određenom stehiometrijskom odnosu, kao što su čisti metali, intermetalnajedinjenja, gde promena strukture materijala nije neophodna za homogenizaciju, predstavljaMechanicall milling 1 (MM). Prednost MM u odnosu na MA ogleda se pre svega u tome štokod MM procesa nije potrebno homogenizovati materijal već se mehaničkom aktivacijom vrši1 Neki od istraživača često umesto termina mechanical alloying koriste termin mechanical grinding (MG).13
