Wastewater is any water which is polluted by humaninfluence. Wastewater includes fluid waste from household, industry,agriculture etc. Industrial plants drops untreated wastewater directlyinto water recipient.80% of Serbian population does not have wastewater treatmentplants. 11% of population is connected on system with biologicaltreatment. 0,1% have mechanical purification system, 4,5% arewaiting for biological treatment plants and 2,5% are waiting forconstruction of mechanical purification system.Quality of surface waters rapidly decreases. Since 1994. waterquality of most Serbian cities fell from second to third class ofwaters. Waters are mainly polluted with nutrients, oil, heavy metalsand organic substances. Surface waters are particulary endangeredin big city and industrial areas. Serbia has a good monitoringnetwork, but lack of experts and equipment represents a big problem.Environmental protection is a priority in modern world. Indeveloped countries wastewater purification system is one of themost expensive and important part of infrastructure. Serbia is quitebackward in regard of developed countries.
