REMEDIATION AND RECONSTRUCTION ATSANITARY REGULATED LEVEL OF REGIONALLANDFILL ’’RAMIĆI’’ IN CITY OF BANJA LUKADragana Nešković – Markić, Željka Šobot – Pešić,Slobodanka PavlovićIndependent Univerzitet Banja Luka, Ecologic facultyAbstract: Waste collected at Banja Luka region has been disposedon “Ramići” landfill since 1976. Terrain on landfill site iscomposed from impermeable rocks so artificial hydro insulation hasnot been conducted. Landfill has been fenced, there was waste entrycontrol and waste treatment has been conducted by machinery. Uptill the war, this landfill was one of the most regulated in Bosnia andHerzegovina, but down to war circumstances, period of uncontrolleddisposal come up. In that period there was no any upgrade andmaintenance in precipitation water collection system which causedits deterioration and system choke. Accordingly, that causedamalgamation of leach ate and precipitation water. As a result, asmall pond formation happened in a central part of a landfill, andwater from pond blast through soil dam so water has been directlydischarged into surface water without any pre-treatment. Inaddition, there was a frequent emergence of fire and odourspreading. Used machinery was obsolete and out of function. Qualityof water, air and soil was jeopardised as well as landfill stability.Since 2004 landfill “Ramići” took regional character (City of BanjaLuka and seven adjacent municipality dispose waste) and cityauthorities conducted intense activities on old landfill partremediation. Aim of remediation is construction of contemporarysanitary landfill which will comply to EU regulation and regulationof republic of Srpska. This will allow space for next 20 yearsdisposal with minimal environment impact.Key words: remediation/ reconstruction/ landfill~ 468 ~
