SUSTAINABLE UTILIZATION OFSUBGEOTHERMAL GROUNDWATERS ENERGY POTENTIALDragi Antonijević, Snežana Lučić, Uroš RadojevićFaculty of Applied Ecology Futura, UniversitySingidunumAbstract: It is possible to take advantage of the energy potential oflow enthalpy geothermal waters available throughout the BalkanPeninsula (so called subgeothermal waters). They could be used forenergy efficient heating of buildings and other facilities throughusage of the appropriate heat pumps. There are several ways howthe principle of heat pump could be exploited for purposes of spaceand facilities heating through utilization of the heat stored insubgeothermal waters. From the environmental aspect, the mostinteresting application is when the heating system with heat pump isused as a substitute for fossil fuel based heating. The utilization ofsubgeothermal water in heat pump systems imposes the need thatsuch water, of changed temperature, be evacuated out of the heatingsystem in an eco-friendly manner – that is, to be released in theenvironment or returned back to ground waters, using appropriatereinjection system. In this regard, before conducting any detailedengineering and design of a specific facility or building, it isnecessary to consider all aspects and possibilities that could emergefrom adverse effects on the environment, and to design and developappropriate actions for environmental protection and remediation.Key words: subgeothermal waters/heat pumps/remediation~ 454 ~
