HOW TO APPROACH THE REMEDIATIONPROBLEM OF CONTAMINATED SITES INEUROPE? CLEAN-UP OF HISTORICALCONTAMINATION AND PREVENTION OF NEWCONTAMINATION/Slađana Đorđević, Zoran JakovljevFaculty of applied ecology Futura, Singidunum UniversityAbstract: Estimations indicate that approximately 250,000 ofdegraded/contaminated locations in the EEA countries and countrieswith available data will require cleaning and remediation actions.It is expected that this number will grow to 3,000,000 by 2025 (plusalready mentioned 250,000).On the other hand, according to available data, more than 80,000locations have been cleaned over the past 30 years. Level ofpolluting activities (and their relative importance as localizedsources) has also been pointed out as worrying factor throughoutEurope, stressing particularly the activities in industrial andcommercial sector, as well as waste treatment and disposal.National reports indicate that heavy metals and mineral oils aremost prominent soil pollutants in researched locations, whilemineral oils and chlorinated carbohydrates are most commoncontaminants found in ground waters.Significant share in remediation costs (35% on average) is allocatedfrom public budget. Despite the so far efforts made in cleaning,elimination of historic pollution will require decades.Particular problem in Serbia is seen in lack of identification andmanagement of locations of specific environmental impact(application of fertilizers in agriculture, increasing overfishing andexcessive hunting, low energy efficiency coupled with pollutantemissions and spreading of exploitation fields, underdevelopedrecycling potentials, large number of wild dumpsites, unregulateddisposal sites, as well as undeveloped brownfield locations on onehand with high loads put on greenfield location on the other).Key words: historical contamination/ remediation~ 442 ~
