PROTECTION AND IMPROVEMENT OF SILVERLAKENenad Mitić 1 , Dejan Marković 1 , Katarina Marić 21 Faculty of Applied ecology Futura, Singidunum University,2 National Library of SerbiaAbstract: 1970 – 1972, in the order to protect the river Danubebanks from the slowing down of the Danube.In the old river bad of the Danube dams were raised up resulting informing the artificial lake.The purpose of the lake was to be the main drainage collector of thesurface and underground waters in the area.However, in addition to it, Silver Lake became one of the mostpopular tourist resorts in Serbia. A settlement of holiday-houses,restaurants and hotel was built in the area around the lake.In the meantime eutrophication process combined with other threekinds of the polluters caused the so-called “ early ageing” of thelake.In October 1994, on the initiative of the local government of theVeliko Gradiste, the first study “The Study of Silver lake” was done.The research was conducted by experts from Faculty of Mine andGeology – Institute of hydrogeology, Institute of Soil Science andFaculty of Agriculture from Belgrade.The results of the research, the estimation of the quality of the wateras well as the measures for the improvement and further protectionof the lake were included in the Study.The conclusion was that the quality of Silver Lake water was poor,thus there should be undertaken certain measures concerning thecontrol of the water quality as well as the prevention from furtherpollution of the lake.Otherwise, failing in undertaking any measure would cause aprogressive degrading of the current state of the Silver Lake, whichwould have further negative effects on using the lake for touristpurpose, water sports and fishing.Key words: Silver Lake, improvement~ 380 ~
