limestone of Slovakian Carst. Both localities represent the worstcategory of abandoned lands. Devastation and degradation effectsmainly of anthropogenic origin excluded completely these plots fromreproduction process. There were opinions in forest practice thattheir recultivation or eventual afforestation is impossible.Fig. 1 Locality Periská and Hrhov in south and east part of SlovakiaIn the locality Hrhov there were established several series ofexperimental plots during the period 1959-1965. The plots weremainly grey, naked and relatively steep stony slopes withsoutheastern aspect. In the locality Periská experimental plots wereestablished from 1957. Both localities have moderately warm up towarm sub-humid climate with annual average temperature of about8º C, total annual precipitation 700-750 mm and altitude about 300-550 m. Extreme character of these localities lies, first of all, in theirgeological and soil conditions, which are characteristic for nakedparent rock, and insufficient soil layer. What concerns topographicelements, slope gradient and broken relief with various, but mostlysouthern slope orientation, are decisive. They are characteristicmainly for lack of soil moisture. The aim of the paper is to assess the growth of forest treespecies and their stands on abandoned carbonate soils in Slovakia~ 361 ~
