RECONSTRUCTION AND GROWTH OF FORESTON ABANDONED CARBONATE SOILS INSLOVAKIARudolf Petráš, Julian MescoNational Forest Centre –Forest Research Institute, ZvolenAbstract: Growth of stands of forest tree species on abandonedcarbonate soils about 20-40 years after their establishment isassessed. Empirical material was obtained in 1995 from 4permanent research plots in the locality Hrhov, where limestoneforms geological parent rock, and from 3 experimental plots in thelocality Periská with dolomite parent rock. Stands composed ofa mixture of Austrian pine, Scots pine and Manna ash may beconsidered the most suitable stands. The mentioned tree species havealso the best height and diameter growth. Both pine species reach onthe studied soil locations average site classes, and in future they mayfulfil also production function. The results confirm recent findingthat Austrian pine, Scots pine together with Manna ash are the mostsuitable tree species for afforestation even of the most extremeabandoned land, mainly on carbonate parent rock. Any markeddifferences have not appeared in their growth what concernslimestone or dolomite parent rock.Key words:abandoned land/Austrian pine/Scots pine/Manna ashINTRODUCTIONReconstruction of forest lands by their reforestation has a longhistory on the territory of Slovakia. First written records come fromthe 17 th century. The Forest Order of the empress Maria Theresa of1770, according to which mainly territories with lack of wood had tobe afforested, follows them. Also the first forest law of 1880imposed an obligation to afforest lands damaged by erosion, landslides, avalanches and others. The notice of the Ministry ofPloughing issued in 1893 regarded afforestation of newly includedabandoned lands under state administration. On the basis of this~ 359 ~
