REVITALIZATION OF INDUSTRIALECOSYSTEMS WITH HELP OFECOREMEDIATIONSMojca Kokot, Ana Vovk Korže, Nina GlobovnikInternational ecoremdiation center, Faculty of Arts, Universityof Maribor, SloveniaAbstract: At the end of the 20th century many political andeconomic changes have happened in Europe, which led to decline ofindustry and many factories closed their doors or they survived witha minimum volume of work. Today these industrial areas presentdegraded areas, because the industry cause many negative impact inenvironment. Industrial areas have increased the concentration ofair pollutants, particularly SO 2 and NOx, dust and also the noise hasincreased. In industrial areas changes in water balance happenedbecause of impervious surface. Water from this surface drain andevaporates quickly and has negative impact on groundwater. Soil inthe industrial areas has often elevated concentrations of cadmium, lead and zinc. These negative changes reduce the ecosystemfunctions of industrial areas and this leads to the decrease in selfcleaningability of the environment. It is believed that in the 21thcentury, for the maintenance of ecosystem stability also the degradedindustrial areas are important. Because it is possible to expose themagain or improve the functioning of ecosystems, so that they canrecover its ecosystem function. Degraded industrial ecosystems canbe enhanced by ecoremediations. These are the natural systemapproaches to maintain and enhance ecosystem functions. In this paper we will present the potential revitalization of industrialecosystems through various types of ecoremediation on the specificcase of industrial area Tezno in Maribor, where one of the largestcar factory in south-east Europe operated, it was called TAM. Nowthere is the largest logistics center in Slovenia, where high-techindustry is developed, which aim is also to increase the stability ofecosystem functioning in the area and the harmony of nature. Thisco-existence can be achieved with ecoremediations.Key words: industry/ ecosystem/ industrial ecosystem/ ecosystemfunction/ ecorememdiation~ 315 ~
