URBAN AIR QUALITY MONITORINGNETWORKS IN PUBLIC HEALTHINSTITUTIONS AND SERBIANHYDROMETEOROLOGICAL SERVICEMarija Ignjatović, Branislava Matić, Mladen Milić,Milica Gojković, Vojislava DudićInstitute of public health of Serbia ”Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut”Abstract: Being familiar with sources of urban air pollution, itsenvironmental impact, and the strategy of pollution control andmonitoring, helps in understanding the pollution, itself. Air pollutionmeasurements are undertaken at the sampling points with recognizedpollution sources, such as: traffic and industry, as well as residentialareas and sites established for pollution traces monitoring(background). Incomplete fuel combustion is one of the key sourcesof pollution. Air quality monitoring in Serbia is undertaken throughmeasurements within two official sampling point networks: PublicHealth institutions’ network, and Republic Hydro meteorologicalService of Serbia’s (RHMSS). This paper deals with values of keyindicators of urban air pollution. Public Health network measuressulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), black smoke and nitrogen oxides (NO x ). As forthe RHMSS network, only wet deposition parameter values will bepresented. A systematic monitoring of air pollutants originating fromvehicular exhaust is undertaken on key urban inter-sections inBelgrade.Trend line was used to present pollution measurementresults from Public Health network. Rising trend line slope marks theSO 2 pollution in Belgrade and Kostolac, while in Leskovac andKragujevac it is decreasing. Black smoke pollution trend line rises inBelgrade, Kostolac, Uzice and Ivanjica. The trend line of NO xpollution is on the rise in Belgrade, Krusevac, Nis and Pancevo, while in Sabac it’s dropping down. Analysis of wet depositionparameters during a continuous 5-year period shows no significantdifference among annual and season concentrations of airpollutants. As for the vehicular air pollution, an increase ofconcentration values of all, but one pollutant (lead) is evident.Key words: urban air/ basic air pollutants/wet deposition/ traffic~ 110 ~
