After a conference heldin Munich in 1938 the agreement was signed inthe early hours of September 30. The purpose ofthe conference was to discuss the future of Czechoslovakiain the face of territorial demands made byGerman dictator Adolf Hitler. The agreement, signedby Nazi Germany, France, Britain, and Italy permittedGerman annexation of Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland.The Sudetenland was of immense strategic importanceto Czechoslovakia, since most of its border defenseswere situated there.SCIENCE AND RESEARCHCrucial periods of Czechoslovak history 1918–1948in historiographical reflectionLiberalization of political and ideological barriers afterthe fall of Communistic regime in Czechoslovakia in1989 has led to intensification of research of period1918–1948. The EASACcovers all scientific and technical disciplines, and itsexperts are drawn from all countries of the EuropeanUnion. The most recent EASAC meeting was held inJune 2008 in Prague.Recent Trends 2008The seminar Recent Trends 2008 is the eleventh ina series of meetings held by Institute of ScientificInstruments ASCR. The first meeting was held in 1989,the second one, in 1990, was held there as well.The following seminars were organized biannually inSkalský dvůr near Brno. This conference is intendedfor discussion of questions connected with the instrumentationand methodology in charged particle opticsand surface physics. Selected themes were introducedby top specialists with emphasis on questionsalready recognized but not as yet fully answered.The second festival of Philosophy in Velké MeziříčíFestival took place 20–22 Jun 2008 in Velké Meziříčíand it was organized by the Institute of PhilosophyASCR with cooperation of the town Velké Meziříčí.The idea of festival arose seven years ago in the northItalian town of Modena. The festival has a goal tocelebrate the philosophy and the literature, to go outfrom the academic grounds to the squares, parksand to address perceptive listeners and the youngpeople especially.BRUSSELSCzech Street Fest in BrusselsThe Permanent Representation of the Czech Republicto the EU opened its doors to the public in Brusselson July 12 2008. On the occasion of the secondCzech Street Fest, the public had an opportunity toget a more depth view of Czech science.
