Wrocław was honored to
host – Mr. Kai-Uwe Bergmann
– one of the partners at Bjarke
Ingels Group (BIG). At very
interesting lecture we have
learned about morphing functions
in Scala Tower, piling up
houses in Mountain project
and wrapping space in the
Danish Pavilion. We were so
engaged by unique approach
towards architecture that we
asked Mr. Bergmann to tell us
more. He said "yes".

Each project begins by investigating numerous
avenues... Some of them turn out
to be vital and thus are saved but many are
discarded but not forgotten. Once we go
through such a selective process we eventually
crystallize the projects main ideas...
This can be the site or the program or even
a third thing. Each project has its own DNA
and thus grows out of this analytical and selective
approach.
One of the inspiration for People's
Building in Shanghai was Feng Shui.
How do you value this approach, is it
a good foundation for architecture?
Its perhaps too much to say that REN is
inspired by Feng Shui as we first designed
it for a city in Northern Sweden and only
later we moved it to China and then applied
the Feng Shui principles. The project did
surprisingly fit well with the five elements
of Feng Shui and this became an important
element for the client.

"Yes is more" – positive philosophy
of architecture's evolution created
by the BIG is focused on designing
buildings by taking into consideration
needs of the client, the urban context,
finances, even politics (expressed best
in the design of Helsingor Psychiatric
Hospital). How do you handle an
investor whose idea of architecture is
based on kitsch and banality?
We spent a considerable time actually
seeking out the clients who share our
values or inspire us. That is not to say that
kitsch is bad or that banality should be
banished – we just want to engage with
clients who are open to our way of thinking
and who then become active participants in
our investigations. It is a very collaborative
process.
In order to provide efficiency in
design BIG invites interns, engineers of
different specialties to work with you.
How do you manage to comprehend
countless ideas and concepts?

We wrześniu podczas cyklicznie odbywającego się spotkania
„Świadome Wnętrze” gościł we Wrocławiu Kai-Uwe Bergmann
– partner duńskiej pracowni Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Podczas
wykładu projektant opowiedział o transformacjach funkcji
w Scala Tower, piętrzeniu domów w projekcie Góra oraz
zawijaniu przestrzeni w Duńskim Pawilonie. Zafascynowani
niezwykłym traktowaniem architektury zapytaliśmy go, czy
zdradziłby nam więcej. Odparł: „tak”.
„Tak znaczy więcej” – pozytywna filozofia
ewolucji architektury stworzona
przez BIG – koncentruje się na projektowaniu
budynków, uwzględniając potrzeby
klienta, kontekst urbanistyczny,
finanse, a nawet politykę, która najlepiej
wyrażona jest w projekcie szpitala
psychiatrycznego Helsingor. A jak sobie
Państwo radzicie z inwestorami, których
wyobrażenie o architekturze opiera
się na kiczu i banalności?
Dużo czasu poświęcamy na wyszukiwanie
klientów, którzy podzielają nasze
wartości i nas inspirują. Nie chcę przez to
powiedzieć, że kicz jest zły, a banalność
powinna zostać zakazana – chcemy po
prostu znaleźć wspólny język z klientami,
którzy są otwarci na nasz sposób myślenia
i stają się aktywnymi uczestnikami analiz.
To proces wymagający współpracy.
Chcąc zapewnić wysoką efektywność
projektów, BIG zaprasza do pracy
stażystów i inżynierów różnych specjalności.
W jaki sposób udaje się Państwu
scalić różnorodne pomysły i koncepcje?
Każdy projekt rozpoczynamy od analizy
wielu aspektów. Niektóre okazują się
„żywe” i są zachowywane. Wiele zostaje
porzuconych, lecz nie zapominamy o nich.
Po przejściu przez ten wybiórczy proces
krystalizujemy główne pomysły projektowe
– plany zagospodarowania terenu,
programy lub inne zagadnienia. Każdy
projekt ma własne DNA, które tworzy się
w oparciu o analityczne lub selektywne
podejście.
Jedną z inspiracji dla People's Building
REN w Szanghaju było Feng Shui.
Czy stanowi ono dobrą podstawę do
projektowania?
In the VM Houses we find flats with
varied schemes, unparallel walls and
acute angles how this kind of boldness
in architecture is received by a common
user of this living space?
What has always surprised me was the
fact that all 230 units of the VM Houses
sold out within a three week period when
they were first introduced in the Winter of
2005. This is quick even for Copenhagen
standards at this time. I am also very
pleased to see that the people who have
moved into the VM Houses are made
up of a variety of backgrounds, ages and
ethnicity.
Zira Zero Island is a unique project
where natural environment was
the main issue, not to mention no
carbon emission. What triggered this
approach?
Zira Island is set on the shores of
Baku, Azerbaijan which is actually the
site of the first ever oil drill and still is
one of the top oil producing countries of
