Язык - сложная развивающаяся система знаков, наделенных значениями, являющаяся средством объективации содержания сознания, выражающая совокупность знаний и верований, чувств и переживаний человека, система знаков и правил их взаимосвязи; система понятий, значений, смыслов, обозначающих действительность, выражающих переживания, фиксирующих мысли; искусство применения знаковой системы в речи и письме; медиум человеческого общения, культуры; форма социальной памяти - хранения и передачи информации; средство управления человеческим поведением; иммунная система культуры, обеспечивающая ее самосохранения. Главные функции языка: экспрессивная, сигнификативная, когнитивная, информационная, коммуникативная. Проблема языка в ХХ в. приобрела универсальный характер (в этой связи говорят о «лингвистическом повороте» в философии науки). Первоначально это было вызвано актуализацией проблемы значения. В качестве критерия научных высказываний использовалось познавательное значение, которое должно быть установлено на основе верификации. Возникла идея построения на этой основе «единого языка науки», в котором все высказывания имеют четкое значение и не содержат бессмысленных, т.е. непроверяемых утверждений. Наиболее радикальной была программа «логического эмпиризма», в рамках которой разрабатывались методы и процедуры элиминации теоретических терминов. Раньше других бесперспективность этого направления осознал Л. Витгенштейн, «Логико-философский трактат» которого стал «библией» логического эмпиризма. Взамен эмпиристской теории он предложил новое определение значения, как способа употребления высказывания, и тем самым положил начало аналитической философии, представители которой немало сделали для прояснения природы таких философских понятий как «сущность», «сознание», «дух» и т.п. Теоретическим ядром этой программы является семиотика как общая наука о знаках, в которой выделяют семантику, синтактику и прагматику. Сегодня язык выступает предметом изучения различных теоретических дисциплин: лингвистики, логики, семиотики, психологии (психолингвистики), социологии (социолингвистики), культурологии и др.
