– be completely satisfied with condition before taking over the watch
– be informed about electrical distribution
– be informed about quantity of the fuel, water and oil
– be informed about ballast system control
– verify fitness of engine crew and their presence
– take care about all precautions for pollution prevention
– be familiar with all detectors, alarms and communication systems
– be familiar with position and use of safety equipment
– ensure that first-aid material is ready for use, especially those for burnings and fractures
– take care of all communication devices with ship and shore
– be capable to prepare engine for emergency as soon as possible
Watchkeeping
Duty engineer must take special care of:
– completing of all tasks, orders, special works and regulations under his responsibility
– Instruments and control systems
– procedures for pollution prevention according to local regulations
– bilges condition.
Engineer on duty should
– In case of an emergency switch on the alarm when necessary and undertake all measures to avoid damage on the ship, cargo
and crew,
– follow the needs of officer in charge of the cargo, and additional needs about ballast and stability of the ship,
– regularly make tours around the installations to avoid failures and accidents as much as possible,
– record satisfactory all adjustments,renewals, repairs and etc. during a watch.
