SAFETY DURING TRAINING<br />

At the beginning the safety already was mentioned but considering instructions for safe work and its organisation. This task includes<br />

other parts of safety related to equipment and control:<br />

Equipment<br />

– condition of equipment must be safe and ready available<br />

– fireman costume and protection aids (helmets, boots, glows, ear protectors etc.) must be well maintained and ready for use<br />

– make sure that broken tool is out of use such as:<br />

– broken spanners<br />

– broken hammers<br />

– files without handle<br />

– make sure that portable tool and motor one is well maintained with special attention to:<br />

– grinding machines, borers and other motor tool,<br />

– electrical connections, breakers, insulations, cables etc.,<br />

– guide rods, extractors, gears, etc,<br />

– perform regular maintenance of the cranes with special attention to:<br />

– chains, ropes, wire ropes<br />

– hooks, eyebolts, shackles<br />

– hydraulic and screw lifts,<br />

– engineroom cranes<br />

– you must know that electrical system need special care, especially when:<br />

– we have »ground« indication on main switchboard, then we must locate current break and repair it,<br />

– equipment must be tested regularly against isolation break<br />

– all breakers and starters must work safe and correct,<br />

– equipment and circuits must be protected by fuses of appropriate value,<br />

– non-conducting mat must be placed around main switchboard<br />

Controlling<br />

During task performing and exercising apprentice engineer must pay attention to:<br />

– all oil and fuel leakage must be collected<br />

– oil and fuel leakage must be located and stop as soon as possible,<br />

– oil and fuel dropping must be collected in special vessels<br />

– bilge space must be clean and free of pollutants<br />

– cocks for testing and draining on the tanks work properly<br />

– overflow tank is checked regularly, and transferred where necessary to avoid pollution,<br />

– fuel temperature in day and store tank<br />

– paints and other flammable materials are well stored in good ventilated spaces<br />

– all bottles under pressure are good lashed on safe locations<br />

– before starting of navigation all free parts are good lashed against moving<br />

– all spare parts are well inspected, and all missing parts are ordered<br />

– secure working space from high temperature and high pressure inflow<br />

– measure oxygen content in tanks before entering<br />

– good ventilation when working in closed spaces<br />

– before entering any closed space all safety measures must be taken into account(wire rope, breathing apparatus must be ready)<br />

– when using some lifting devices all parts must be checked and properly secured<br />

– system for remote control of the valves and other equipment is always ready for use. They are usually:<br />

– valves of storage and day tanks<br />

– fuel valves of main engine<br />

– boiler safety valves<br />

– boiler stop valves<br />

– emergency bilge pump<br />

– fixed firefighting equipment<br />

– watertight doors<br />

– emergency equipment and systems are well maintained and ready for emergency use, what consider;<br />

– emergency power supply<br />

– distribution system for navigation, radio, lighting etc.
