First potential candidates for Rio 2016
In February this year first Croatian candidates – one as top Olympic
candidates and the others as potential A candidates - were put on the list of
potential participants at the XXXI Olympics that will be held in 2016 in Rio
de Janeiro (Brazil).
Among the top candidates are the winners of Olympic medals at the Olympics
in Beijing 2008 and the Olympics in London 2012, and they are classified into
gold, silver and bronze medal candidates, depending on the type of medal
won.
Potential A candidates do not have medals, but most of them had either
great performance at the Games or they were put on the list thanks to
their high position in the world rankings and medals won at the European
Championships. Anyway, both of them will have to confirm their status in
2014, at the new, demanding international sports competitions.
Of course - in the end - only those who will qualify and meet the standards
and criteria established by the International Olympic Committee, in
accordance with international sports federations of Olympic sports, as well as
the criteria of the Croatian Olympic Committee foreseen by the project Rio
Olympics 2016, will compete at the Olympics.
In the group of top Olympic gold candidates are the winners of gold medals
from London - Sandra Perkovic (discus throwing), Giovanni Cernogoraz
(trap) and men’s water polo team with 15 athletes.
In the group of top Olympic silver candidates are: Blanka Vlasic (high jump)
and Filip Ude (pommel horse) with Olympics in Beijing 2008, and rower’s
foursome Valent Sinkovic, Martin Sinkovic, David Sain and Damir Martin,
with silver from London.
And finally, in the group of top Olympic bronze candidates are: Snjezana
Pejcic (archery) with a medal from Beijing 2008, Lucija Zaninovic
(taekwondo) and men’s handball team, eighteen of them, with medals from
London.
From January 1 st 2013, on the list of potential A Olympic candidates are
to the dynamic world of the Olympic movement in which, beside the sports
events, they are acquiring skills of international understanding, excellence, fair
play, solidarity and integrity of the heritage of Olympism.
