based on the revised list Casualties of War 1941-1945 from 1964.
The analysis of the list showed that 11,330 VKJ soldiers from the
territory of Croatia were taken into captivity, which represents 7.93%
of all captives from the territory of Yugoslavia. Severe living conditions
in captivity brought about the death of 514 soldiers, which is 4.54%
of all captive soldiers from this territory, as well as 0.24% of the total
number of casualties of war in Croatia. Among them 67.70% were
Serbs, 29.57% Croats and 2.73% of other and unknown nationalities.
Most of them perished during the first and the last year of war when
27.63 and 20.23% of captives lost their lives. Most Croats before
release from prison camps lost their lives in the first two years of war,
while Serbs and other Yugoslav oriented Croats continued to perish
throughout the war. It is established that half of the casualties
(50.19%) were killed while a third of them (33.85%) died in captivity.
The German Army is liable for the death of 90.13% of captives while
liability for the other 9.87% falls on the Italians. The analysis of the
socio-economic structure shows that soldiers, policemen, and gendarmerie
suffered the greatest losses regarding their percentages in the
total number of captives (16.4% to 8.54%).
