them. Parts of dam reservoirs, being the breeding sites of waterfowl and fish sprawning
grounds, should be periodically closed to tourism.
2. The following steps are proposed:
• a broad awareness-raising action, with special emphasis given to the natural values of
the Oder and its valley, focused on the inhabitants of the villages along the river. Contacts
between local environmental NGOs and schools would be valuable here;
• publishing and distributing leaflets, videos and papers stressing the natural, cultural
and landscape importance of the river and its valley;
• ecological camps for the youth and teachers from the adjacent communes. Competitions
of various kind, related to the subject of the Oder and its nature, as well as ways
of protecting it;
• the training of qualified tourism guides.
3. Amateur fishing should be encouraged on the Oder and selected ox-bows, excluding
only areas of the highest natural value.
4. It is necessary to carry out an action plan which would make the public and decision-makers
aware of the enormous negative impact of the planned restructuring of the river
for navigational purposes.
Others
1. Curving up the valley along the lines of new ecological barriers should be reduced to
the minimum. New road and rail bridges, pipelines and energy lines should be built next to
the existing barriers of that type. The land bearings of new bridges should be placed as far
from the banks as possible, permitting the maintenance of the maximal width of the valley
and the ecological corridor. The construction of bridges should involve a maximal reduction
of noise and new traffic lines should not be built alongside the river in the Oder valley.
2. It is necessary to urgently indertake a full and comprehensive natural evaluation of the
parts of the Oder and its valley that have not been properly researched so far. Researches
must also be conducted on rare and protected species of fauna and flora, the degradation
level of the most valuable ecosystems, and identification of the direction of long-term
changes occurring in riverine habitats. Detailed evaluation should be carried out systematically
and gradually – firstly focusing on the least modified areas.
3. It is necessary to identify the level and direction of synanthropisation of plant communities
in the Oder valley, as well as to propose methods of combatting this process, as it can
lead to irreversible changes in native flora and degeneration of entire ecosystems.
