Summary
nate here, but there are also large patches of lowland willow-poplar floodplain forests
(Salici populetum) and lowland ash-elm floodplain forests (Ficario-Ulmetum
campestris).
•
The forests of Miêdzyodrze and near Stepnica on Szczecin Bay – an area of highly
humid and marsh forests with a total area of about 2 500 ha, and a high degree of naturalness.
Evaluation of natural resources
For the purpose of this study, the following criteria of evaluation of natural resources in
selected parts of the Oder valley were adopted:
• geomorphological (presence of flooded terraces, steep scarps, number and size of
ox-bows),
• afforestation (woodiness) (presence and level of naturalness, size of area and age of
treestands in alder carrs, riverside carrs, oak hornbeam stands),
• presence of extensive wetlands and flood-meadows,
• existence of protected areas (landscape parks, areas of protected landscape, nature
reserves, ecological grounds, nature and landscape complexes),
• existence of bird areas of the international (RAMSAR Sites) and national importance.
Evaluation of natural resources, carried out in accordance with the above criteria,
resulted in identification of three categories of area importance, based on their value and the
function of an ecological corridor.
The following terrains were classified as Category I, of the highest importance:
• large and dense forest complexes,
• extensive wetlands and flood-meadows,
• large and abundant ox-bows,
• bird sites of international and national importance,
• extensive flood terraces and well-developed scarps on the valley edges,
•
areas linking the corridor of the Oder valley with the main tributaries (Warta, Nysa
£u¿ycka, Bóbr, Barycz, Kaczawa, O³awa, Stobrawa, Nysa K³odzka),
• nature reserves, national parks and landscape parks, existing and planned.
Areas classified in Category II, of high value:
• smaller and scattered forest complexes,
•
• small, isolated ox-bows,
•
smaller waterlogged meadows and floodplains,
mouth parts of the main tributaries, except for those included in category I.
Areas of Category III:
•
parts of small forest complexes,
• areas of protected landscape. 213
