Summary
An evaluation of waterfowl wintering in Poland, carried out in January 1985, showed
52,731 birds belonging to 31 species spending the winter on the Oder.
The Oder valley, despite considerable anthropogenic changes, still possesses a whole
range of terrains, inhabited by rare bird species. Sites of international importance (placed on
the Ramsar List or as Important Bird Areas in Europe) are the following:
• Forest in the Oder valley between Narok and Wroc³aw
• Forest in the Oder valley between Rzeczyca and Wroc³aw
• The S³oñsk Nature Reserve (Kostrzyñ Retention Reservoir)
• The Lower Oder valley
Around the Szczecin Bay are:
• The Lake Œwidwie
• The Szczecin Bay
• The Rozwarowskie Marshes
• The Kamieñski Bay
• Estuary of Œwina
A nationally important bird site is £ê¿czak Fishponds, Wielik¹t Fishponds and Police
Meadows.
Protected areas in the Oder valley
Currently, there are no national parks in the Oder valley, the only one – Wolin National Park
– was created on the extension of the valley, on Wolin Isle. A transformation of the Landscape
Park „Lower Oder Valley” into a national park is planned, together with an enlargement
of its area and establishment of a transboundary Polish-German National Park of the
Lower Oder Valley. Also the fragment of the valley situated on the edge of Wroc³aw
Proglacial Stream Valley and Œcinawa Depression, between Rzerzyca and Œcinawa, possesses
national park certain features (a landscape park is currently proposed there).
There are three landscape parks situated in the Oder valley (Cysterskie Kompozycje
Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich, Cedynia Landscape Park of the Lower Oder), while three others
are proposed in Legnica and Wroc³aw Provinces and one in Freienwalde Basin. There
are also nine areas of protected landscape, 18 nature reserves. In addition to that, in the
close vicinity of the valley, there are six other landscape parks, nine areas of protected landscape,
42 nature reserves. The gradual increase in the number of protected areas along the
entire Oder valley and in its proximity is planned – in Oder valley 14 nature reserves, nine
areas of ecological use, and 27 nature reserves and two areas of ecological use in the proximity
of the Oder valley.
Characteristics of the natural resources of the Oder valley
The most valuable natural resources present in the area surrounding the Oder include extensive
wetlands and deciduous forests – in some parts preserved in a perfect state.
Wetlands have remained in the valley on the lowest flood- terraces, in places where the
river had not cut deeply into the valley, and on the edges of scarps. Also the presence of
