Jedná se o řadu slabik 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 6 a na všech místech vyznačených svislou
čarou (snad krom dvou) je pauza obligátní; po life promlouvá nový mluvčí. Publikum si nemůže
povšimnout, že cosi schází; vnímá první sekvenci 6 + 4 jako celý verš, ale ony čtyři
slabiky se spojují s následujícími šesti a vytvářejí další celý verš atd. Současný editor stojí
před těžkým rozhodováním; ať už vysází danou pasáž jakkoliv, jeden z veršů bude vždy
příliš krátký:
He but usurped his life. Bear them from hence.
Our present business is general woe.
Friends of my soul, you twain
Rule in this realm and the gored state sustain,
nebo
He but usurped his life.
Bear them from hence. Our present business
Is general, atd.
Druhým příkladem je:
Utter your gravitie ore a gossips bowles,
For here we need it not. | – You are too hot. | 6 + 4
Gods bread! it makes me mad.118 | 6
nebo
For here we need it not. – 6
You are too hot. Gods bread! it makes me mad. 4 + 6
Třetí příklad:
Who, I, my lord! We know each other faces,
But for our hearts, | he knowes no more of mine | 4 + 6
Then I of yours; | 4
Nor I no more of his,119 | then you of mine. | 6 + 4
Lord Hastings, you and he | are neere in love.120 | 6 + 4
Takové pasáže tedy vytvářejí sofistikované akustické klamy, které zůstávají neodhaleny
díky vnitřním pauzám.
§24. Nebude na škodu analyzovat delší souvislou pasáž podle zásad obhajovaných
v této studii. Následující úryvek je metricky neobyčejně zajímavý:
