Read the text and complete the activities which follow:
RABIES (‘hydrophobia’)
Rabies is due to a virus which invades the nervous system
causing encephalomyelitis . It is spread by the bite of
a rabid animal, e.g. dog, wolf, vampire bat, skunk, fox,
mongoose.
Clinically: the incubation period is two to sixteen weeks
or longer. There is restlessness, delirium, convulsions,
painful spasm of the pharynx on swallowing (saliva therefore
drolls from the mouth), paralysis and death.
Prevention: strict quarantine of imported animals for six
to twelve months. Vaccination.
Treatment: scrub bites and scratches with soap and water.
Attenuated rabies vaccine may help if given soon after
the patient has been bitten, but is useless once symptoms
are present. Rabies antiserum.
