two in 1792 46 and fifty-six in 1806. 47 They also were attached to the parish
at Görömböly.
In the Miskolc area Görömböly constituted the largest Greek Catholic
community until the first half of the nineteenth century. Its church served
as the center of religious life for the largely Ruthenian speaking believers
in Miskolc, Diósgyőr, Csaba, Mály and Kisgyőr. Their spiritual needs were
served by the priest at Görömböly. The prestige of the church was greatly
enhanced because it was also the financial center for the Tapolca abbey,
which belonged to the benefice of the Munkács bishopric. This situation
only changed at the beginning of the twentieth century, when the number
of Uniate faithful in Miskolc came to exceed that of those at Görömböly.
At that time an independent congregation came to be established and
a church built at the county seat. Thus Miskolc gradually developed into
the local center for Greek Catholics. These trends were solidified in 1925,
when on October 27th Antal Papp, titular archbishop and former Bishop
of Munkács, established his official residence at Miskolc. He became the
chief bishop of the Apostolic Governorship of Miskolc, which was formed
from those parishes of the see of Eperjes that still remained in Hungary.
