FOREWORD
Dear colleagues, dear employees!
We continue a good old tradition and announce the Annual Report for the academic year
2009/2010, trying to memorize all our teaching, scientific and professional achievements.
In the past academic year traditionally organized Symposium in Opatija again attracted numerous
scientists, so more than 400 scientific papers from 24 different countries were presented. Great
number of our employees took part in its organization. I thank all of you, who in various ways
contributed the Symposium to bring it to its its final phase. The next symposium will be organized
by the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb. Thus, I wish you to rest up in the two forthcoming years.
You’ve deserved it!
In this academic year the Monography of the Faculty of Agriculture, being considered our
important project, has been completed. It has been published on the occasion of its 50th
anniversary, representing the first half century of the institution which deals with teaching and
with promotion of one of the most human occupations - the agricultural one. As it is mentioned in
the Lord’s prayer «Give us this day our daily bread»; this is our objective, as lodestar, for us and
the generations to come.
Beside luck, as employees of the Faculty of Agriculture, we have the honour to inherit 50 years of
its history, started by our elderly colleagues who had developed it in a visionary manner. They
surely contributed to education of thousands of agronomists, thousands of those who served the
country and the profession, possesing knowledge gained during education at our Faculty. The
Monography represents our effort to give them full credit, as they deserve to be mentioned as
those who enabled us to inherit the jubilee of the oldest Faculty of the University of Osijek. As
the old Latin proverb says «verba volant, scripta manent» (spoken words fly away, written words
remain), we have tried to keep in memory all these people who contributed to its establishment
and to its development. All achieved in the past fifty years has been presented in the publication
with the aim to ease writing of new editions by younger generations and preparing of future
anniversaries.
I apologize for eventual involuntary omissions on behalf of the editorial board and on behalf of all
colleagues involved, colleagues who devotedly took part in its publishing. My great thanks to all
those who gave contribution to Monography publication.
In this academic year we have completed 2nd cycle of the Bologna process, the first generation
of students graduated. Despite problems and misunderstanding typical for every beginning, we
made a good start at undergraduate level, so I am sure that we will continue in the same manner
on graduate level. I ask all professors for a little more patience, until moving to new campus
premises. We do believe that the next academic year will begin on the new campus premises, that
will meet the needs of all teaching, scientific and research needs. Additional efforts have to be
made in respect to newly established studies of Horticulture (Vegetable Growing and Floriculture,
Fruit Growing, Viticulture and Viniculture). Beside technical facilities, the most important is
human resources development and investing in teaching staff who meet a burden of the studies
and thus no more depend on assistance given by the Faculties from Slovenia and Bosnia and
Herzegovina. On this occasion I would like to thank professors of the above mentioned faculties
for helping us in establishing graduate study programmes.Without their support this would not
have been possible.
