reveals that such a pattern does in fact exist but
with two indicatively different variations. Older
partisan films (those shot up to the end of the
nineteen sixties) more or less uniformly reproduce
the construct of Slovenliness as developed in
the nineteenth century and as exemplified in an
authentic relationship with nature. In contrast,
later films are more urban to the extent that it is
possible to think that they serve as one of the
more important points in the reconstruction of
Slovene national identity from a predominantly
rustic model to one that is more contemporary,
urban as well as proper to the new Slovene
social fabric.

The Slovene mountain film: A century
of independent film production in the spirit
of rock sub/culture

The emergence of the Slovene mountain film was
influenced by many social and cultural conditions
in the beginning of the 20th century. One of these
was the institutionalisation of the sport and the
group of young mountain climbers within the
Skala (Rock) Tourist club. Other important factors
are the rise of the bourgeoisie and the technical
revolution witnessed by the culture industry.
In the background to these social conditions that
brought about the shooting of the first Slovene
mountain films, stands the referential cultural
framework that the author of this article dubs the
alpine culture of Slovenliness. It is in this light that
the wider context of the emergence of the first
Slovene mountain films is discussed, films that are
also in/directly connected to alpine photography
and landscape painting.
