EVALUATIO OF TEACHER - STUDET RELATIOS:
STUDETS' VIEWS
On the basis of empirical research this article considers social relations in teaching
process. The sociological and educational literature points out the connection between the
character of dominant social relations and subjects, primarily teachers and students, in
educational process.
The research explores teacher-student relations from the students' viewpoint. The
sample consists of 141 students (primary schools-grade eight, and grammar school-grade
four) from one large and one small island town. the evidence was gathered by a
questionnaire. idt consisted of a three level scale asking for: 1. reciprocal respect and
confidence, 2. strict discipline, and 3. laissez faire relations.
The results show that democratic relations (reciprocal respect and confidence) vary
from 49 to 83 per cent in primary schools, and 41 to 47 per cent in secondary schools.
Autocratic relations (strict discipline and control) in teaching process are found to be more
present in urban areas while laissez faire relations are dominant in large urban areas
(primary schools) and in non-urban areas (secondary schools). The article compares these
results with the ones found in Zagreb (1990) pointing out the necessity of creating a
democratic teaching process, education and society.
