SHAFTS • Drill and blast • Raise boring • A large diameter (1-3 m) bore is pulled through the shaft GROUNDWATER INFLOW • The inflow rate depends on: • Rock permeability • Groundwater level • Tunnel depth • Groundwater recharge rate • Tunnel dimensions • Typically inflow rates are from 5 to 50 l/min/100 m • Inflow is controlled by grouting Raise bore Posiva Oy/Jussi Partanen 5

NOISE, VIBRATIONS, DUST • Underground construction sites do not emit significant noise to the surface • Venting causes the most significant noise, easy to control with silencers or repositioning of the venting fans • Blasting vibration are controlled blasting length • Dust is mostly retained underground. Dusting to the ground surface is minimal EXAMPLES • Viikinmäki • The water treatment plant in Helsinki. Began operation in 1994. Residential area next to underground facility. • Several underground car parks • In Helsinki: Erottaja, Kamppi, Kluuvi • ONKALO • Underground rock characterisation facility • Ca. 500 m deep • www.posiva.fi • Typically the disturbance caused by undeground facilitys is minimal 6
