Title of the contribution:
Cycle Tourism as a Potential Generator of Tourist Destinations
Development in Croatia
Keywords:
Croatia, cycling, cycle tourism, cycle routes, special interest
tourism
Type of presentation:
Scientific Paper
2. TemATSkA cJelinA: TURizAm Uz voDe i RiJeke i nA RiJekAmA i voDAmA
Theme:
Creation and distribution of rural tourism products
(sport and recreational and/or adventure tourism) and/
or Tourism along the water and river
Purpose of study:
Emphasize the importance of cycle tourism in Croatia as
a fast-growing form of special interest tourism, show the
status, opportunities and potentials for more intense
development of cycling, supporting infrastructure and
networks of cycle routes/directions in Croatia with the
intention of effective connecting of Croatian regions to
existing EuroVelo cycle routes, a network of Europe sustainable
tourism.
Methodology/Approach:
The first phase of research: collecting and processing
the data of the questionnaire on holders of development
and promotion of tourist destinations at the
county level (DMOs – tourist boards) and members of
management bodies of other legal entities (companies)
involved in cycling and cycle tourism in Croatia. The second
phase: a qualitative survey that will expand the database
collected during the first phase of the research.
Findings:
Confirmation of increased use of bicycle in daily transportation
of Croatian cities population, and emphasized
Structured abstract
recreational and transport needs of tourists-cyclists on
holiday in Croatia. For optimal use of existing secondary
road network is necessary to establish a national coordination
with key stakeholders in public companies owned
by the state through a system of project planning and reporting.
What is required is a clear differentiation of cycle
routes/directions, high-quality maps, GPS track log and
online promotion of cycle routes/directions projects, as
well as cooperation with travel agencies in creating and
selling the cycle tourism package arrangements.
Originality/Value:
The formation of the first Croatian register, publicly available
database, of cycle routes/directions and supporting
facilities as a key site of recording, processing and update
information on cycle routes/directions and facilities
on/in the vicinity of the cycle routes. This register will be
a central place for informing and planning the cycling
vacations in Croatia for domestic and foreign tourists
and visitors, and on local level for cycle clubs, residents
and other physical subjects and legal business entities.
Research limitations/Implications:
The current lack of data collection and research of cycle
tourism and its potentials in Croatia, within the study
of special forms of tourism, has limited its appropriate
evaluation and implementation in development of
comprehensive and content Croatian tourism offer, as
well as the diversification of the active holiday tourism
product in Croatia.
Practical implications:
Research results can be used for proper positioning of
cycle tourism in Croatia, defining its place in the European
context (improving integration with the EuroVelo
cycle routes), designing the future development plans
and directing further activities of cycle tourism as a
potential for achieving sustainable development of
Croatia.
