Title of the contribution:
Rural traditional house plot on example of St. Anton
village nearby Opatija
Keywords:
plant species, house plot, rural garden, rural area, tradition
Type of presentation:
oral
Theme:
heritage and tradition in tourism
Purpose of study:
Despite the conciseness that traditional rural architecture
and rural area should be protected, traditional
house plot is completely neglected. The goal of this research
was to explore which outbuildings appeared on
house plots; how they were distributed; what the paths
and fences looked like; and which plant species were
grown.
Methodology/Approach:
Field research was conducted on a one time basis at the
end of April 2011. Nine house plots that fulfil the following
conditions were analysed: they belong to domicile
inhabitants and surround old houses. On chosen house
plots, outbuildings, fences, paths, plant species, ‘pergola’
and the other elements typical for Kvarner area were
listed. Results are shown on tables and graphs.
Findings:
Among outbuildings within houseplot we marked stable
with hayloft (6). On chosen house plots soil and
stone paths were found. The most used fence type was
Structured abstract
‘suhozid’, rarely wood or wire. 97 plant species were listed:
4 annual and biennial, 41 perennial, 15 geophytes
and 37 wooden species. 22 were considered as autochthonous,
75 cultivated species. Among all of plant species,
82 had ornamental purpose, and the rest of 15 utilitarian.
Garden elements that were found were: ‘pergola’,
pot plants, iron bars and ‘šterne’.
Originality/Value:
Till now, similar research of rural area wasn’t conducted
in this region. The protection of traditional house plots
of all rural regions, therefore Kvarner region as well, is
of the same importance as the protection of traditional
architecture and it is an unavoidable element for quality
of rural tourism development based on autochthonism
and tradition. The value of this research is its attempt
to list typical structures, plant species and elements of
traditional gardens before their disappearance.
Research limitations/Implications:
The research was conducted on a rather small number
of house plots of (9) permanently inhabited houses just
once in the spring, so it is not possible to show the appearance
of plant species during the entire vegetative
season.
Practical implications:
It is essential to know all the elements of traditional
house plots (outbuildings, fences, paths, plant species
choice, garden furniture and details) in order to manage
complete renovation and show the entire image of
a traditional rural household.
