Title of the contribution:
The Typologies of Traditional Heritage as a Part of Rural
Tourism in Slavonia and Baranja
Keywords:
traditional heritage, rural tourism, typology
Type of presentation:
PowerPoint presentation
Theme:
Typologies of traditional (ethnographic) heritage as a
part of rural tourism in Slavonia and Baranja.
Purpose of study:
To determine the requirements and possibilities of establishing
typologies of traditional heritage in rural
tourism that utilize a criterion of authenticity, and to
indicate the advantages and disadvantages of such typologies.
Methodology/Approach:
The field studies and documented examples of rural
households carried out have formed the basis of an
overview of ethnographic heritage as part of rural tourism
(induction). Analysis of presented examples determined
the characteristics and peculiarities of applying
traditional heritage to forms of rural tourism (comparative
analysis). Based on this, we sought to explain the
need for typologies and their scope and possible limitations
(deduction).
Findings:
There were two main types of findings. The first provided
an overview of the typical ways in which traditional
heritage has been applied to tourism in Slavonia and
1. TemATSkA cJelinA: BAšTinA i TRADiciJA U TURizmU
Structured abstract
Baranja, indicating success is dependant upon two factors:
a relatively well preserved environment and a traditional
heritage, with particular focus on architecture
and gastronomy. Here the presentation of traditional
heritage is open to varying interpretations, resulting in
artificial construction and sometimes falsification. This
has had a double implication which affects the ethnic
heritage itself and rural tourism. The second type of
findings defines the proposed typology and the criteria
to be used.
Originality/Value:
The research presented can be defined on two levels:
documentary and scientific. This overview of different
forms of rural tourism gives insight into the development,
diversity and the confusion that surrounds this
type of tourism. This presentation attempts, for the first
time, to classify the different forms of rural tourism using
professional scientific criteria to evaluate traditional
heritage, authenticity and appropriateness of use when
considering the preservation of inherited values.
Research limitations/Implications:
Typologies can be understood as a defined open-end
system permeating various aspects of modern rural life.
They should neither absolutely define single professions,
nor departmentalise the culture and cultural heritage
into a rigid, petrifying scheme.
Practical implications:
Typologies of rural tourism using tighter criteria have
impacted at three levels: directly in rural tourism, indirectly
for national-level regulatory and organizational
institutions and those involved professionally or scientifically.
These levels are potential application typologies.
