Purpose of study:
Familiarize the public with the undisputed values of traditional
architecture in Podravina (with examples). Elaborate
the present condition of traditional architecture
in Podravina. Provide examples and ways of economic
revalorization of old buildings primarily for the needs of
tourism.
Methodology/Approach:
Methodological work first elaborates the main geographic,
historical, economic and functional factors
of development of rural architecture in Podravina, followed
by an elaboration of historical-cultural value of
old buildings through an overview of basic types of
village houses, farm buildings, barns and vineyard cottages,
with a statement of the most relevant examples.
Ways of revitalization are also offered, with proposals
for acceleration of that process.
Findings:
The analysis of traditional heritage shows that it is very
much applicable in the rural tourism segment. The traditionally
constructed village houses (mostly from the
19 th ct. and newer brick houses from the early 20 th ct.)

possessing certain typal characteristics are likewise a
part of the ambience image of Podravina villages. Since
the devastation of the building heritage stems from a
number of economic and sociological factors, the public
must be informed of the changing awareness of its
value and contemporary use. The paper provides examples
of positive trends in that direction. A part of traditional
buildings is appropriately restored and used for
economic purposes, primarily in tourism. The forms of
restoration and economic revalorization of old buildings
with examples are presented Križnica, Ješkovo,
Stara Gora, Jagnjedovec, Podravske Sesvete, Hlebine,
Rasinja, Torčec, etc.
Originality/Value:
This is one of the first researches of the value, role and
potential of traditional architecture of Podravina in
tourist valorisation. The material obtained from multiple
informants was used, as well as the documentation
of municipal and county governments. The most important
buildings were photographed and researched on
the spot. All written materials on the subject were collected
and used.
Research limitations/Implications:
Traditional construction in Podravina is rapidly falling
into ruin, with a relatively small number of the most
valuable examples remaining. Furthermore, since this
problem area wasn’t researched often, the required material
was collected mainly through field work.
Practical implications:
The findings of the research can be used for the development
of plans, ways and organizational revitalization
of old buildings for the needs of rural. Since the development
of such plans and their inclusion in international
funding are still in the beginning stages in Podravina,
papers of this type should be an incentive for the furthering
of such projects.
