Title of the contribution:
Architecture of gable in German colonist houses in
Şandra, Timiş County (Romania)
Keywords:
traditional architecture, peasant houses, gable, German
colonists, Şandra (Timiş County, Romania)
Type of presentation:
poster
Theme:
Heritage and Tradition in Tourism „Traditional buildings”
Purpose of study:
The purpose of the present study is to point out a few
aspects related to the rural architecture of German
colonists houses, emphasising the presence of gables
as distinct elements as major attractions in ethnic rural
tourism
Methodology/Approach:
The methodology of our research was based on field
research to reveal German colonists houses and their
specific gables: we analysed building techniques, type
of exposition, evolution of the gables from simple to
baroque, focussing on preservation methods, on valorising
methods with a view to include them in rural
tourism tours as either museums, accommodation, or
workshops areas
Structured abstract
Findings:
We found out that architectural typology can be obtained
through corroborating plan data and decoration
data. From this point of view, there are, in the commune
of Şandra, German colonists houses that are either perpendicular
to or parallel to the street houses, all of which
have ornamental gables bin simple style or in baroque
style – a heritage that could be valorised through etnhic
rural tourism.
Originality/Value:
The paper is original because this is the first time that
such rural heritage is advanced as a possible ethnic rural
tourism attraction in an area that most tourism agents
have been ignoring for decades. It is an area synthesising
the main features of German colonist rural architecture
– building plan, building materials, decorations
Research limitations/Implications:
There were no research limitations, but the implications
are huge: if we manage to promote this asset of Romanian
heritage, rural Timiş will have what it deserves
Practical implications:
One of the possible solutions for reviving rural Timiş
is ethnic rural tourism: this possibility has never been
prospected so far, but it would make the point in rural
development
