Purpose of study:
The purpose of the present study is to point out a few
aspects related to the organisation and evolution of
rural households in Oltenia, emphasising the types of
houses and the building materials as major attractions
in rural tourism
Methodology/Approach:
The methodology of our research was based on field
research to reveal dwelling-type buildings: we analysed
building plans focussing on preservation methods, on
valorising methods with a view to include them in rural
tourism tours as either museums, accommodation, or
workshops areas

Structured abstract
Findings:
We found out that dwelling typology can be obtained
through corroborating plan data and elevation data.
From this point of view, there are, in highland areas, two
main types of permanent dwelling buildings: one-level
dwelling and one relatively higher level (1.5 m) with
variable heights because of the uneven soil, on the one
hand, and tall dwelling with open loggia, with columnsupported
roof, and with veranda
Originality/Value:
The paper is original because this is the first time that
such rural heritage is advanced as a possible rural tourism
attraction in an area that most tourism agents have
been ignoring for decades. It is an area synthesising the
main features of rural architecture – building plan, elevation,
building materials, utility
Research limitations/Implications:
There were no research limitations, but the implications
are huge: if we manage to promote this asset of Romanian
heritage, rural Oltenia will have what it deserves
Practical implications
One of the possible solutions for reviving rural Oltenia is
rural tourism: this possibility has never been prospected
so far, but it would make the point in rural development
