Purpose of study:<br />

Rural areas in Dubrovnik region are rich with significant<br />

capital in agro – food and natural resources which<br />

are also ideal tourist product. Therefore „Trails of wine<br />

and flavors “acting as a network of rural development<br />

and authentic offer of the territory represents the<br />

connection between agricultural and tourism sector.<br />

Methodology/Approach:<br />

Trails of wine and flavors are to be established on<br />

the example of the most active Italian trails, project<br />

partners from Tuscany and Trentino. After activities<br />

with the producers from the field: informing producers<br />

and local government, producer’s data base is created.<br />

Organizing Initiative Committee. Definition of quality<br />

standards for categories which are to be included.<br />

Defining logo of the Trails and its signalization. Develop<br />

promotion plan and promotion materials, educational<br />

tours and participation in the fairs.<br />

Findings:<br />

Development of “food and wine” tourism, sustainable<br />

and responsible development, development of the<br />

region, branding destination and creation of unique<br />

Structured abstract<br />

and recognizable image of destination, the possibility<br />

of direct sale and marketing, activation of new market<br />

segments, visitor education, employment, extending<br />

the tourist season, increasing the number of visitors<br />

in rural areas, creation of successful events, new<br />

investment, increased the offer of regional cuisine in<br />

restaurants.<br />

Originality/Value:<br />

Trails of wine and flavors, systematically designed,<br />

emphasize the tradition of living but at the same<br />

time provoke new values and enable presentation of<br />

enogastronomy in tourist function. Potential memebrs<br />

of the trails are indigeneous and traditional agrofood<br />

producers, wine producers, restaurant owners,<br />

accomodation units, traditional atritians, and in order<br />

to establish public – private character of this integrated<br />

tourist itinerary members can be also municipalities,<br />

tourist boards and chambers of commerce.<br />

Research limitations/Implications:<br />

Creating the trails requires the cooperation of public<br />

and private sector and application of uniform attitudes<br />

while establishing modern and integrated tourist<br />

offer which is connected with rural areas and specific<br />

gastronomic, catering, natural and cultural resources.<br />

Practical implications:<br />

The trail system is process of development: cultural<br />

(completely changing access to available resources),<br />

economic (a real growth of local economy) and social<br />

(developing new and innovative relationships and<br />

connections).<br />
