Demonstration of horse tourism form in developed
countries and its development in frame of Croatian
horse tourism
Purpose of study:
Purpose of the study is to obtain knowledge based on
foreign examples about the forms of horse tourism from
the means of using horses and providing primary services
in horse tourism standpoint.
Methodology/Approach:
Horse tourism is at the beginning of development in the
Republic of Croatia and there is no organized conducting
of its activities, therefore, research is based on studying
forms of horse tourism in countries where it is developed,
and obtaining information with goal of checking
what forms of horse tourism can be developed in horse
tourism of the Republic of Croatia.
Findings:
In countries with developed horse tourism, there is a
large spectrum of means of using horses in horse tourism.
Using horses in tourism depends on environmental
factors (relief, climate etc.), on tourists interest, and
regional tradition. For development of horse tourism in

prospective of satisfying interest, it is important on the
national level to develop and promote as many means
of horse using possible in horse tourism. In preparing
the offer, it is important to relate horse tourism with tradition
and natural wealth of the region in which activity
is being conducted. Alongside with the development
of any form of horse tourism, it is important to develop
system of insurance in case of accident, to have professional
personnel, and well trained horses.
Originality/Value:
In Croatian literature there are no papers and researches
which investigate horse tourism. We hope this paper
will inspire interest of experts, but also give the information
to start with organized development of those
forms of horse tourism which are adequate to location,
tradition and living in Croatian territory. We also hope it
will initiate legislative drafting with goal of quality development
of horse tourism and safety of tourists and
service providers.
Research limitations/Implications:
Since Croatian horse tourism is in the early phase of development,
obtaining national data on horse tourism
forms being conducted and the rate of their development
is completely limited.
Practical implications:
Knowledge obtained during research of forms of horse
tourism in developed countries, will be useful during the
selection of forms that should be developed in Croatia,
considering tradition and geographic characteristics of
certain locations in the Republic of Croatia.
