Title:
Promotion and presentation of rural cultural heritage
through the concept of the development of ecotourism
in protected areas in Vojvodina
Key words: rural heritage, ecotourism, protected areas,
rural tourism, Vojvodina.
Type of presentation: Research work
Theme:
Heritage and tradition in tourism
Purpose of study
Ecotourism and rural tourism are often tightly connected.
One of the main principles of ecotourism emphasizes
the necessity of the inclusion of local communities.
One of the possible ways for achieving that is through
the presentation of local cultural heritage that has the
ability to enrich the ecotourism offer. This work presents
ways that serve that purpose.
Methodology/Approach:
Methodology is mapping of all potential and existing
objects of cultural heritage that are important for enriching
the ecotourism offer. Their selection according
to priorities and groups based on potential criterion.
Findings:
Results imply that ecotourism and rural tourism (in this
case it is the one who promotes local heritage and culture)
are not purely different forms of tourism but also
the way to promote the concept of the protection of
nature through the concept of a so-called active protec-
Structured Abstract
tion. This also enables the exploitation of resources of
protected values though sustainable development. So
far the concept of the protection of nature in Vojvodina
has been observed through different economic activities
such as forestry, fishing or hunting, which are all not
completely agreeable with the concept of sustainable
development of protected areas. Local population with
its cultural heritage opens new possibilities and promotes
the concept of the protection of nature through
the development of tourism.
Originality/Value:
Research represents specific case study that shall prove
that tendencies and problems of local community in the
tourism of protected areas in Vojvodina do not greatly
differ from some other regions and countries.
Research limitations/Implications
Limitation is recognized in inadequately emphasized
correlation between the protection of nature, local
community and sector of tourism. This limitation is often
invisible in Vojvodina due to many reasons: management
of protected areas is not motivated to get involved
in tourism activities, local population does not
recognize the purpose of the protection of nature or for
some similar reasons.
Practical implications:
Practical implication is recognized in new possibilities
and opportunities in the process of the protection of
nature as well as in achieving new and more quality interaction
between local community, sector of tourism
and management of the protected areas.
