Theme:
Eco-tourism development in the Sava River Basin, focusing

Purpose of study:
ISRBC has identified tourism as an area for future work.
The main objectives of these activities are to: (i) draft
Outline of Operational Guidelines, (ii) examine best
practices and (iii) discuss capacity building, for ecotourism
development in the Sava river basin.
Methodology/Approach:
A Core Expert Group will be established by the ISRBC
to define thematic priorities and directions for discussions
on eco-tourism development in the Sava river basin.
Two regional events (workshop and conference) will
be organized. The participants will be stakeholders and
experts from the basin and abroad. Based on the results
of the two events, an Outline of Operational Guidelines
will be prepared.
Findings:
The above mentioned multi-stakeholder events will result
in drafting the Outline of Operational Guidelines
for eco-tourism development in the Sava river basin

Structured abstract
– Ramsar sites particularly. It will define the main purpose
of the Operational Guidelines (either as an expert
contribution to decisions makers or as a strategic document
at policy level that could serve as input to national
strategic planning of sustainable tourism) and outline
scope of work for preparation of master plan for development
of eco-tourism in the basin. It will be important
for strengthening the cooperation between local communities,
policy makers (ministries and other relevant
authorities) and managers of natural parks and protected
areas.
Originality/Value:
The protection of nature and its wild life in Ramsar sites
is always endangered with the group of tourists who
come to the protected areas. But the sustainability of
the economy (e.g. tourism) could be ensured by implementing
appropriate measures taking account the
vulnerability of eco-system. Until now the sporadic attempts
have been applied (e.g. Lonjsko polje), but the
common approach is needed to ensure the sustainability
of eco-tourism.
Research limitations/Implications:
For the realization of planned activities the commitment
of relevant institutions for development of such
strategic documents is needed. At first stage the close
cooperation between experts and stakeholders is essential.
Practical implications:
The Outline of Operational Guidelines is a basis for further
development of comprehensive Guidelines which
will define main topics to be addressed and methods
to be applied to promote the eco-tourism in the Sava
river basin.
