Title of the contribution:
Promoting Romanian pastoral landscape through rural
tourism
Keywords:
pastoral landscape, pastoral customs and feasts, rural
tourism
Type of presentation: poster
Theme:
Creating and Distributing Products in Rural Tourism:
New Tourism Forms in Rural Areas
Purpose of study:
The purpose of the study is to develop and implement
solutions for the improvement of economic status of
traditional rural households on animal (sheep) farms
Methodology/Approach:
The research method we have used is the analysis and
synthesis of sheep breeding evolution on the range and
in temporary sheds for animals. We used documenting
on immemorial time routes of sheep transhumance and
on the way distance used to be assessed through days
and weeks of marching (stone crosses, sheep routes)
Findings:
We found out that, in order to use efficiently pastures and
haymaking fields far from one’s household, farmers found
it easier to take the sheep to those places where they
Structured abstract
used to build up specific traditional dwellings (pit houses,
pens, sheep farms, shelters, sheepfold, enclosures), sheep
routes and salt routes, wells, stone crosses (to guide the
sheep). We also found out that shepherds also observed
pastoral feasts and customs related to sheep milking or
to the ritual sacrifice of lambs. All this could be used in
implementing new forms of rural tourism.
Originality/Value:
The originality of the paper consists in the fact that
there has never been, so far, a valorisation of this special
aspect of rural economic life in rural tourism or in
any other form of tourism. We bring forth such customs
as the Living Fire, the chasing of the witches that steal
sheep’s milk, the cancelling of the cuckoo’s power of
souring the milk, etc. that we integrate in a rural tourism
programme.
Research limitations/Implications:
There has been no research limitation whatsoever, but
the implications of the paper are huge: if implemented,
this type of valorising rural assets would result in a niche
type of tourism – pastoral tourism in Oltenia (Romania).
Practical implications:
The promotion of a pastoral form of rural tourism – traditions,
customs, etc. – would support rural development
in rural Oltenia, as an alternative source of income
for sheep breeders.
