Title of the contribution:
Agrotourism in Italy – a field study of Veneto region
Key words: Italy, Veneto region, laws, agritoursim
Type of presentation: upon agreement
Theme: agritourism
Purpose of study:
The purpose of the study was to determine international
differences in the segment of selective forms of
rural tourism for which Italy was used as a country of
successful development of rural tourism. On the case of
Veneto region which increases year by year the number
of agritourism businesses and the number of boarding
in such tourism we gave an overview of some specifics
which are regulated by the Italian national and Veneto
regional laws. Based on a field survey in 2011. we
showed a field case study.
Methodology/Approach:
Statistical data of the Italian national Institute for statistics
(INEA) was used and their series of data from 2009. and
2010. about the structure of agritourism businesses’
in Italy and region Veneto. The pilot field study was
executed in 2011. by visiting several agritourisms in
Veneto region. Through a structured interview asking
36 questions to the owner of agritourism we gathered
original data for this paper.
Findings:
From our survey we have noticed that agritourism in
Italy had certain problems in running their business
that had similarity to the Croatian situation. For example
the production of agricultural products on farm is
Structured abstract
a limitation factor in food and beverages offer. This
problem was solved with purchase contracts with other
farms in the region. Further limitations to employment
and seasonal employment is similar as in Croatia, often
the family cannot serve all guest in proper time creating
a bad service and bad image. These two obstacles along
with the problems of free time organization (certificates
needed for each activity ex. Biking, collecting forest
fruits etc.) hinder the agritourism development.
Originality/Value:
Original data were collected through the field survey
on a selected number of agritourism businesses in
region Veneto, Italy. Through a structured interview
with the owners we collected data from 36 questions.
The questions referred to sociodemography features
of the business owner; characteristics of boarding
and lodging facilities; about the gastronomy offer
promotion activities, questions about the cooperation
with institutions obliged for agro tourism and about the
agricultural production.
Research limitations/Implications:
The research limitations concerned the specifics of
Italian laws which have very detailed regulations about
agro tourism business. It was impossible to refer to all
regulations, therefore a limited number of parameters
which were crucial were discussed in the paper.
Practical implications:
Acquired knowledge from the field survey showed that
Italian agritourism owners are very actively involved
in the approach „bottom up“ in creating regional
regulations for the reason of best resource on work and
specifics of natural, historical and cultural surroundings.
