Rural space development potential in Croatia

Purpose of study:
To establish the situation in rural areas of Croatia today
(with their regional differences) and the chances for revitalization
processes, especially in the segment of rural
tourism.
Methodology/Approach :
Study of the available scientific and professional documentation,
especially “good practice“ examples (both
foreign and home). Examination of the situation in different
rural regions today by qualitative methods of
case studies and semi-structured interviews with respondents
(relevant social actors). Specific suggestions
and solutions for the improvement of the worrying situation.
Findings:
The findings should stimulate political and economic
decision making processes about the rural space in
order to improve particular segments of rural develop-

ment. Some findings might prove a useful tool when
defining guidelines for the development of certain villages
or specific activities in them.
Originality/Contribution/Value:
By comparing positive examples of foreign practice
and original and specific values of Croatian villages, the
qualitative research can greatly contribute to the development
of rural areas. In some segments, rural space
in Croatia has become very vulnerable and demands
a great deal of attention and a very special approach if
progress is to be made.
Research limitations/Implications:
Research limitations are possible in the final realization
and acceptance of results at both local and higher levels
(e.g. political structures).
Practical implications:
Scientific findings should be adapted to practical use.
They should define the guidelines for the development
of the village and its activities today (such as rural tourism
or organic farming) based on the concept of sustainable
development wherever possible.
