Purpose of study:<br />

The purpose of this analysis is to point out to the importance<br />

of the rural tourism and its influence to the<br />

development of the overall touristic sector of Serbia.<br />

In order to provide necessary preconditions for using<br />

touristic potentials of Serbia, this analysis highlights<br />

the importance of strategic rural tourism development<br />

in the context of sustainable (touristic) development of<br />

the country.<br />

Methodology/Approach:<br />

The analysis of the role and importance of rural tourism<br />

in the context of the rural development of Serbia is<br />

based on contemporary national and international teoretical<br />

knowledge and relevant sources and applies adequate<br />

quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The<br />

methodologies used are: descriptive method, method<br />

of analysis and synthesis, comparative method, inductive<br />

and deductive method, as well as swot analysis.<br />

Findings:<br />

General expacted results will be related to confirmetion<br />

of the basic presumption: If sustainable development<br />

of tourism maily depens of the geographic physiology<br />

of rural areas, than the potentions of the sustainable<br />

touristic development of Serbia could be considered<br />

as being important, having in mind that more then<br />

80% of serbian territory is rural area inhabited with cca<br />

44% of population. The results of this research should<br />

highlights the importance of institutional regulation of<br />

tourism sector as well as the key potentials needed for<br />

successful implementation of strategic management of<br />

rural tourism.<br />

Originality/Value:<br />

The main objective in this research is to assess if the resource<br />

potentials for rural tourism developmnent are<br />

recognized and used as the source for initiating and<br />

creating of the innovations and competitive advantages.<br />

It is envisaged to present the achieved results of<br />

the scientific and expert conferences in the country and<br />

internationaly and to publish them in the magazines of<br />

national and international importance.<br />

Research limitations/Implications:<br />

Fact that touristic sector shares with cca 2,5 % in the<br />

GDP and with cca 5-6% in the overall empoyment in<br />

Republic of Serbia, points out that potentions of touristic<br />

resources of Serbia are not adequate recognize and<br />

valorize.<br />

Practical implications:<br />

The practical objective of this paper is to define main<br />

standards and to give key directions for furher improvement<br />

of sustainable rural tourism as a generator of sustainable<br />

economic development of Republic of Serbia,<br />

based on analysis of the present situation in the serbian<br />

touristic sector.<br />
