Development of rural tourism in Danube region in the
context of EU Danube strategy

Purpose of study:
By participating in the Danube strategy of the European
Union, opportunities for the infrastructure development,
environment protection, transport and tourism
development are being opened to Republic of Croatia
and to many of its counties. The purpose of the study
is to determine the extent of broadened opportunities
for a rural tourism development within the aforementioned
strategy.
Methodology/Approach:
For the writing of this article we will use domestic and
international data sources, available contemporary international
and domestic literature and other sources
gathered on congresses, seminars, expert workshops
of this and similar topics. In this topic analysis we will
use different methods of scientific research with an intention
of providing as credible and concrete scientific
knowledge. We will apply the methods such as inductive-deductive,
analytic-synthetic, the method of classification,
comparative, statistic and historic method, and
similar.
Findings:
In a research we will start from the assumption that the
Danube region can achieve a much better tourism development
if a more serious approach towards the Action
plan (as an integral part of the EU’s Danube Strategy)
is being applied on a national and regional level.
As an alternative for the current situation, the need for
a creation of new levels for the development and management
of rural tourism of Croatian Danube region will
be proved, with a goal of better use of sources that will

be available in EU funds through the Danube Strategy.
The purpose of research will be in a determination of
current state, defining the problems and in seeking the
efficient organizational model, with whom the development
of rural tourism of the Croatian Danube Region
will be intensified and the coordinated gatherings and
project preparation of wider macro-regional importance
by departmental ministry and NUTS regions will
be secured.
Originality/Value:
The expected scientific contribution will be shown
through comprehensive overview and critical analysis
of existing scientific knowledge from this topic research.
Also, with this research, the importance, methods
and activities of national and regional institutional
support, as well as the stakeholders in a more intensive
development, management and (co)financing of the
projects on a NUTS level will be identified. Based on the
acquired scientific knowledge, we will give the recommendations
for a development of rural tourism of the
Croatian Danube region and in that way attempt to apply
the scientific knowledge in the practice.
Research limitations/Implications:
Even though the financing of the projects from EU funds
has enticed a sizeable interest of numerous expert and
scientific professionals, the literature, and also the new
scientific knowledge are still insufficient. Therefore, with
this research we aim to provide a scientific contribution
to this field of better use of sources from EU funds, with
an emphasis on the projects of rural tourism of Croatian
Danube Region.
Practical implications:
The results of the research will primarily help the regional
and local administration, existing system of Tourist
Boards, as well as to all other private or public institutions
who are involved in a development, planning
and implementation of activities, having the function
of intensifying of tourism development of the Croatian
Danube Region.
