Theme (Thematic area addressed):
Regional and cross-border cooperation
Creation and distribution of rural tourism product
Purpose of study:
In this paper, we formulate the hypothesis that regional
co-operation opens possibilities in terms of rural tourism
product development and diversification that can
generate certain economic, social and ecological benefits
for both counties, Montenegro and Croatia.
Methodology/Approach:
Paper gives an overview of cross-border cooperation
between Montenegro and Croatia. The special focus is
given to the IPA programme and its results in the recent
past. Apart from secondary data, we will collect data
via survey of experts and other included in the IPA programme
and projects under this programme.
Findings:
Regional and cross border co-operation can be considered
as a tool for increasing destination competitiveness.
This has to be considered important in the case of
Structured abstract
Montenegro and Croatia, due to the fact that relatively
small tourist destinations should co-operate more in order
to define the marketing strategy which will increase
their competitiveness on the global tourism market. Regional
co-operation opens possibilities in terms of rural
tourism, especially in terms of product development
and diversification. Key findings show that identified
potentials are not valorized completely, but the process
has begun with several projects under the IPA crossborder
cooperation programme.
Originality/Value:
The originality of our contribution is twofold. Firstly, we
examine the relationship between cross-border cooperation
and rural tourism development. Moreover, we
will research the results of IPA programme projects in
the area of rural tourism. Finally, we will collect the data
about key and critical limitations of rural tourism development
in terms of cross-border cooperation between
Montenegro and Croatia.
Research limitations/Implications:
The key limitations are identified in terms of the limited
number of projects regarding rural tourism under IPA
programme, and as consequence of this, limited width
of collected data.
Practical implications:
Key practical implication is that policy makers in both
countries should include the findings of this contribution
into the development of future destination marketing
strategy and creation of superior level of experience
to different market segments.
