Theme:
Creating and Distributing Products in Rural Tourism:
New Tourism Forms in Rural Areas
Purpose of study:
The purpose of this paper was to rediscover the
traditional architecture of rural households and to
emphasise rudimentary buildings and temporary
shelters, the materials and building techniques of
annexes with a view to promote them as part of rural
tourism forms
Methodology/Approach:
The methodology we used in this paper consisted in
the study of the traditions specific to animal breeding in
rural households of the Vâlcea County, in the analysis of
landscape types (pastoral, agrarian), in the study of farm
animals, in the identification and description of animal
breeding annexes.
Finding:
The permanent rural household of an animal breeder
is made up of the following buildings: house, annexes
Structured abstract
reserved to the breeding of animals, fodder barn, enclosure,
gate, well, kitchen, latrine. The annexes destined to animal
breeding are the pigsty, the hen house, the stable, and the
maize barn. Households are built depending on climate,
trade, and socio-economic status of the owner. In pastoralagricultural
areas, it has a double yard, while in scattered
villages where animal breeding is the major trade, it is
surrounded by defence walls.
Originality/Value:
The originality of the paper consists in the fact that
there has never been, so far, a valorisation of this special
aspect of rural economic life in rural tourism or in any
other form of tourism. We focus on the solutions for
offering shelter to humans, animals, and tools, for the
production, storage, conservation, and consumption of
produce, for family and spiritual activities – all of which
could be introduced in rural tourism programmes.
Research limitations/Implications: There has been
no research limitation whatsoever, but the implications
of the paper are huge: if implemented, this type of
valorising rural assets would result in a niche type of
tourism – rural tourism in Oltenia (Romania).
Practical implications:
The promotion of rural tourism – architecture, traditions,
customs, etc. – would support rural development in
rural Oltenia, as an alternative source of income for
animal breeders.
