Of the people who remember the campaign:
• 84% of adults and 76% of youth intends to dial 112 when needed.
• 86% of adults and 77% of youth intends to follow tip 2.
• 79% of adults and 77% of youth intends to follow tip 3.
Al this had happened before I joined the Justice department. This summer the campaign has been repeated
in a different version. It now also includes a new, 4th tip.
But before I continue with my story it may be useful to tell you a bit more about the Dutch Justice
Departments Violence Prevention Program, which has taken shape in 2004.
Violent crime in Holland
In 2004 almost one quarter (24%) of our citizens are concerned about the safety of our streets and 13%
worry about violence.
Some Dutch violence facts. These are based on incidents reported to the police, so you know the limitations.
Holland has a population of about 16 million. Violent crime has been steadily increasing in the Netherlands
over the past 20 years. In fact during this time it has increased by a factor 4:
• 26.500 crimes 1980;
• 49.600 in 1990;
• 86.600 in 1999;
• over 109.000 in 2002.
• Close to 50% of violent crime is assault and abuse;
• 25% is attempted murder, murder, manslaughter, etc. and threats to do the same. Most of it is threats;
• 20% is all sorts of violent theft, the stealing of mobiles being increasingly popular;
• 6% is sexual assault.
