SUMMARY
Cherry is a high cost, favored fruit. Recently, most of the production is exported
to the Russian market. The demand is so great, that doubling the current production
output would not satisfy it.
Cherries are ample fruits, and are most often grown to be 4-6 meters or even
larger. For common use, they are picked manually, and thus the picking is the largest
cost in production. Using ladders, a worker can average 100-120 kg of picked cherries
daily. This is why the main strive of the fruit growers, who specialize in selection, is to
create a dwarfed rootstock which would enable picking without the ladder or at least
with a smaller ladder.
Rootstock of the oblačinska cherry is grafted in two ways: During August on
sleeping buds, and during the spring with a branch. Grafting with a bud yielded inferior
results, with the average revenue of 47,5% for the 6 examined varieties. The worst
reception had the variety of Burlat (39,0), and the best one New Star (62,5). The better
results were achieved by grafting with a branch where the average was 93,75. Grafting
success, with this technique, spanned from 89% for the variety Peter, to 97,5 for the
variety of Hedelfingen cherry, while the grafting technique hasn’t made an impact on
the height of the seedlings. Thus, the average heights for the bud grafted seedlings were
170,7cm and 174,82 for the ones grafted with a branch. The diameter of the seedling at
height of 10cm from the surface was 1,50cm for the bud grafted, and 1,56 for branch
grafted.
