there is ancient material at Kozören, Beyözü contains a greater quantity of
architectural material of a more varied character. Last, the topography of the
Beyözü matches that described in the Miracles of Theodore, which make it clear
that the defences had a clear view in all directions except the north, appropriate
for Beyözü, but not for Mecitözü, Kozören, Elvançelebi, or Çorum.
Elmapınar
In the village of Elmapınar (F0303), 2 km. west of Beyözü, there were
several blocks decorated with Christian symbols (F1555, 1559) and two
Byzantine tombstones (F0304, F0305). Although there was a separate ancient
settlement at Elmapınar, the very small quantity of undecorated spolia here,
combined with the low sherd counts from the intensive survey adjacent to the
modern village, suggest it was smaller than the settlement at Beyözü. This
gives some sense of the impact of the cult of Theodore at Euchaita and the
donation of civic status by Anastasius.
Intensive Survey
The work in Beyözü and Elmapınar was complemented by intensive survey
around the two villages as far south as the outskirts of Mecitözü (Fig. 7). The
use of GIS allowed the rapid generation of kernel density maps for easy visual
analysis of artifact concentrations. Significant clusters of ceramics were found
immediately to the south of Beyözü as well as concentrations on Kale Tepe
and Kabak Tepe to the northeast of the village. Ceramic concentrations were
very rare between Elmapınar and Beyözü and in the fields to the northeast of
Beyözü. (Fig. 8, 9)
Further to the south of Beyözü, the survey showed a decreasing density of
artifacts from the village to the immediately surrounding fields. Further south,
several small concentrations of ceramics and tile were found, suggesting
farmsteads or smaller settlements. These concentrations were approximately
