(F1051, 1053) and a number of water channels and stone pipes. The village
also contained two large elements from a cereal processing installation (F1446,
F1447). This is similar to other local villages which also had one or two cereal
processing units, suggesting some sort of centralised village production. Other
finds from Beyözü included several glass fragments (one being part of a fifth or
sixth century wineglass lamp (S1184-002)), a pithos with applied cross (F1764),
three fragments of Proconnesian marble revetment (S1614-02, S1730-01, F1790),
and a piece from a small white marble column (diameter 0.07 m) (S1611.02).
A total of 26 bronze coins were recovered from Beyözü, either donated by
the inhabitants of the village or found in the fields around it. 3 The identifiable
finds included imperial coinage of the Roman, late Roman, and later middle
Byzantine periods, a find spread typical of central Anatolia (Fig. 4). The period
before Anastasius’ grant of civic status is represented by only one coin, the
period from Anastasius to the seventh century by six coins, and then there is
a gap before 12 coins of the eleventh century. No coins from the Islamic era
have yet been recovered. There was a single Roman fourth century coin from
Antioch, as well as two coins of Anastasius and one each of Justinian I, Phocas,
Constans II, and a sixth-seventh century issue. There were 12 anonymous folles
from the eleventh century as well as a coin of Constantine X Ducas and Eudocia
(1059-67)
The Beyözü village was overlooked from the East by two hills: Kale Tepe
and Kabak Tepesi. The remains of a rampart with a gate, towers, and a ditch,
facing north are clearly visible on Kale Tepe (F0201) which may be the site of
the defensive enclosure referred to in the Miracles of St. Theodore. Geophysical
survey in this area showed that the gate also had flanking structures. On
the interior of the defensive wall a substantial rectilinear structure c. 25 x 25
m. with a series of smaller rooms around a central area, is perhaps a keep
(Fig. 5). The intensive survey discovered some chipped stone, and some late
Roman material and Byzantine material (including an Unglazed White Ware
II fragment), though the area within the walls was dominated by Medieval
