visits to nearby villages including Elvançelebi, Alören, Sarıhasan, Kozören,
Bayındır, and Figani. The remote sensing team, led by Stephen Wilkes (IBM
Vista Birmingham) used magnetometry and Ground Penetrating Radar
(GPR) to investigate surface remains and concentrations of surface material
identified by the intensive survey. In 2007, two FM256 fluxgate gradiometers
and a SIR3000 GPR with 400 MHz and 200 MHz antennas were used; in 2008,
a wheeled Foerster Magnetometer was utilized for the large area coverage
magnetic survey. This was run in tandem with GPR for focused investigation
and ground truthing of areas of interest established in the 2007 survey and a
Geoscan FM256 Magnetometer for areas (especially ploughed fields) unsuitable
for the Foerster. In 2007 3.87 hectares were covered by magnetometry survey
and 0.83 hectares with GPR, while in 2008, magnetometry surveys covered a
total of 4.3 hectares with GPR surveys covering a total of 0.16 hectares. Lastly,
in 2008 a paleoenvironmental group led by Warren Eastwood (Birmingham
University) examined several caves in the vicinity of Mecitözü in the hope of
finding speleotherms but were unsuccessful.
Results
The results from the intensive survey, village survey, and remote sensing
complemented one another. They can be divided into four major areas:
Beyözü, Elmapınar, the plain to the south of Beyözü, and the broader region.
Beyözü Village
Although the village of Beyözü was visited by David French in the 1960s, no
detailed archaeological investigation has previously taken place. A systematic
search was made for architectural elements in the village. There were very
few in situ ancient features, but there was a very large volume of spolia. All
of the major architectural elements found were of local limestone, i.e. there
was no significant imported material. Almost all of the datable material from
the village is from the fifth century A.D. or later, though there was a fourth
