Site No. 118. Site Name: Tell el-Abd
UTM East 768503; UTM North 4035322. Date: EB – Iron – Persian – Hell – Rom
– Byz – MA/Ott 9/7/2008: This steep hill, roughly 250 m above sea level, is the
most defensible site in the area. It sits at the base of the Amanus range, where
the foothills meet the plain, near the village of Uçgüllük. It offers a commanding
position, towering over the plain as well as a wadi system running up (and over)
the Amanus mountains. Visibility on the slope and top was good, though the
steep slopes made collection difficult. Ceramic remains started at the very base
of the hill. Several looter’s pits were found at the top of the site.
Site No. 119. Site Name: Kactaş 2
UTM East 752810; UTM North 4026737. Date: Rom – Byz
4/7/2008: This site to the north of the holiday village of Deniz Yaylası,
was approx. 12,600 sq m., set on two terraced fields (lower and upper). Large
numbers of roof tiles, fragments of vessels, and even sherds of ancient glass
from these terraces were present, while the terraces themselves were of an
unknown date. These modern terraces may cut through a site which had
originally occupied a gentle slope. Kactaş 1(Site 99) and Kactaş 2 are both close
to the old village of Kactaş. Kactaş 2 was designated because it was located in
the low agricultural field and found with Roman and Byzantine sherds.
Site No. 120
UTM East 765576; UTM North 4038228. Date: Hell – Rom – Byz
12/7/2008: A dense concentration of roof tiles, with some other ceramic
remains, in a field overgrown with tall (≈1.5 m tall) bardunis (fennel) on the
E side of the modern road to the village of Uçgüllük. The bardunis greatly
obscured visibility, but we were able to collect a large number of sherds,
though it was difficult to discern the true extent of the site.
